Drivers could face stricter MOTs ON TOP of Labour Party Chancellor Rachel Reeves' 3p-per-mile road tax. Motorists and road users could face pay-per-mile car tax being recouped through MOTs.

MOT testers could check road users' mileage, to claw back pay-per-mile cash. Ms Reeves is expected to announce in her November 26 Budget that drivers of electric cars will be charged around 3p per mile from 2028.

Government sources say the new system would not use GPS tracking or "black box" technology - but drivers could have to declare their estimated mileage each year and pay a fee based on that figure.
