Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) delivered a brutal putdown to President Donald Trump on Tuesday in response to the president’s attack on her the day before.
In an interview with Fox News’ Laura Ingram that aired Monday, Trump aimed an onslaught at Omar and her country of birth, Somalia.
“I look at somebody that comes from Somalia, where they don’t have anything – they don’t have police, they don’t have military, they don’t have anything, all they have is crime – and [Omar] comes in and tells us how to run our country!” Trump said.
Trump also lashed out at Omar’s accusations that Trump had routinely violated the Constitution, particularly with his administration’s strikes on suspected Venezuelan drug traffickers that even a Republican senator has condemned as illegal “extrajudicial killings.”
“‘The Constitution says this,’” Trump said, imitating Omar’s critiques of his administration. “The whole thing is crazy!”
Sharing the clip of Trump’s remarks on social media, Omar responded to the president’s attacks with a quip of her own.
“Unlike you, I can read and that’s why I know what the constitution says,” she wrote in a social media post on X Tuesday.
Omar was not alone in condemning Trump’s remarks about both Omar and Somalia.
“Remember, he hates the Constitution more than he hates Ilhan Omar or Somalia,” wrote journalist and former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan in a social media post on X Tuesday. “Also, his own wife is from frickin’ Slovenia.”
Political commentator Brian Krassenstein, who's amassed nearly 1 million followers on X, condemned Trump's remarks as racially motivated, writing in a social media post that "the racism just seeps from his breath."
Omar was born in Somalia, but fled the country with her family to Kenya amid the Somali Civil War, living in a refugee camp for four years before immigrating to the United States in 1995 when she was around 12 years old. She has since become a naturalized U.S. citizen.
Nevertheless, Trump has hounded Omar over the years over the country she was born in, issuing repeated calls for her to be deported to Somalia amd writing as recently as last week that Omar should “go back."
