Bihar polling was set to break all past records with 68.84 per cent voter turnout recorded till 9 pm in the second and final phase of assembly elections on Tuesday for 122 assembly segments. The figure was certain to climb further as the Election Commission of India updates the number till midnight on polling day.
Even 68.84 per cent till 9 pm, which is certain to rise, is a historic high, breaking even the first phase polling of 64.69 per cent. In fact, this is the highest ever voter turnout since assembly and Lok Sabha elections were first conducted in 1951-52, beating the Lok Sabha record of 64.6 per cent in 1998. The highest turnout that assembly elections had witnessed before this was in 2000 when 62.57 per cent voters turned out for polling.
