Former LSU football coach Brian Kelly filed a lawsuit Monday against LSU in an attempt to confirm that the school fired him without cause and establish that he is entitled to his contractual buyout of nearly $54 million.
The Advocate first reported Sunday that Kelly and his representatives set a Monday deadline for LSU to confirm that it fired the former coach without cause, allowing him to receive the full buyout. After a call between the sides, that deadline passed without an agreement.
On Monday, Kelly's attorneys filed the lawsuit on his behalf, alleging that LSU informed the coach's representatives during the call that the school has not "formally terminated" him and believes it has reason to fire Kelly for cause, which could prevent it from paying the full sum.
