Delhi Police are investigating a deadly explosion involving a Hyundai i20 near the Red Fort that occurred on Monday evening, resulting in at least twelve fatalities and numerous injuries. The vehicle, believed to have been used in a terror attack, was tracked over an 11-hour journey starting from Faridabad. CCTV footage and communication records are being examined as part of the investigation.
The car was seen moving through various locations in Delhi before the blast, which took place around 6:52 PM. Eyewitnesses reported a loud explosion that set nearby vehicles on fire and scattered debris across a wide area. The blast has been linked to a larger conspiracy involving terror modules in Kashmir, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. Following a review led by Home Minister Amit Shah, the case has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Investigators have identified Dr. Umar Nabi, a doctor from Pulwama, as the suspected driver of the i20. It is believed he died in the explosion. His mother’s DNA is being tested against remains found in the wreckage. Dr. Nabi was reportedly connected to a terror module that was recently dismantled in Faridabad, which included two other doctors linked to the recruitment of operatives for Jaish-e-Mohammed.
CCTV footage shows the i20 making its final journey through busy streets, including a stop near Sunehri Masjid and a U-turn at Chhata Rail Chowk. The car slowed down at a traffic signal just before the explosion, raising questions about whether the blast was triggered remotely or manually. Investigators are scrutinizing over 100 CCTV clips to map the vehicle's route and identify any potential accomplices.
The police have detained several individuals, including Tariq, who allegedly provided the car to Dr. Nabi. The vehicle's ownership history is under investigation, revealing a complex chain designed to obscure the bomber's identity. Forensic examinations suggest that ammonium nitrate and other explosive materials were used in the blast.
In response to the incident, a city-wide alert has been issued, with increased security checks at border points and the closure of the Red Fort Metro Station. Authorities are also searching hotels and guest houses in the vicinity for possible accomplices. The investigation continues as officials work to piece together the events leading up to the tragic explosion.
