A massive landslide partially collapsed the newly constructed Hongqi Bridge in Sichuan, China, on Tuesday afternoon. The incident was captured on video and shared widely on social media. The bridge, which spans 758 meters over a river, is part of a national highway connecting central China to Tibet. It had only opened a few months prior to the disaster.
Authorities in Maerkang city reported that there were no casualties or injuries resulting from the collapse. The bridge had been closed on Monday as a precaution after officials detected slope deformation and shifting terrain on the right bank. Further inspections revealed cracks in the roadway, prompting local authorities to activate an emergency response. They placed warning signs and issued a traffic control notice to inform the public.
By Tuesday, the slope had deteriorated further, leading to the landslide. The video shows rocks and debris cascading down the mountain, obliterating the roadway and part of the bridge, creating a large cloud of dust and smoke. Once the dust settled, parts of the highway and bridge pillars were visible on the ground, while the remaining structure appeared intact.
Officials have not provided a timeline for repairs to the bridge. Motorists have been advised of detour routes by local authorities. This incident marks the second significant infrastructure failure in China in recent months. In August, a railway bridge under construction in Qinghai collapsed, resulting in the deaths of 12 workers. The Business & Human Rights Centre reported that a section of the railway failed over the Yellow River during a tensioning operation when a steel cable snapped.
The Qinghai bridge is noted as the largest-span double-track railway steel truss arch bridge in the world, intended to connect the Sichuan-Qinghai high-speed rail line to Tibet. Additionally, in July, a bridge in Gujarat, India, collapsed over a river, killing 11 people, with a 12th victim succumbing to injuries weeks later.
