A man has been convicted of murdering his girlfriend's baby son by violently shaking him. Kieran Humphreys, 33, was found guilty of killing six-month-old Archie Woodbridge after losing his temper while caring for the infant. The incident occurred on February 9 last year, shortly after Humphreys began dating Archie's mother, Saskia Woodbridge. Saskia, 20, had left Archie in Humphreys' care at a friend's home in Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire, while she went to get her nails done. Luton Crown Court heard that Humphreys had been awake all night playing video games before he inflicted fatal injuries on the baby. The court was informed that Humphreys “gripped and shook” Archie, resulting in a severe brain injury and fractured ribs. Instead of calling for help immediately, he took the injured baby to a relative's home. It was only about 90 minutes later that an ambulance was summoned, following a report of concern for the baby’s welfare. Archie was rushed to hospital but sadly died shortly after arrival. Detective Chief Inspector Nick Gardner from Bedfordshire Police described the case as deeply distressing, stating, "a defenceless baby lost his life at the hands of someone who should have been caring for him." In a heartfelt tribute, Archie's mother expressed her devastation, saying, "Kieran claimed to love Archie, but his actions were the opposite. Kieran ripped Archie from this world, in an evilness that is unmatched." She reflected on her hopes and dreams for her son, lamenting the loss of the future they would never share. Humphreys was found guilty of murder and child cruelty, having previously pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice. He lied to police, claiming that Archie had been with his mother when he fell ill and that an ambulance was called immediately. The court heard that evidence indicated Archie had been subjected to violent shaking, leading to his tragic death. Sentencing for Humphreys will take place at a later date, as the family continues to mourn the loss of their beloved child. Gardner added, "My thoughts are with Archie's family at this difficult time - nothing can bring him back, but I hope today's verdict brings some measure of justice and peace." This case highlights the tragic consequences of violence against vulnerable individuals and the importance of accountability in such distressing circumstances.
