WASHINGTON — The longest government shutdown in history could end in the coming days. Senators approved a funding package to reopen the government. Now, the focus moves to the House.
After 42 days, the stalemate on Capitol Hill could be nearing the end. If all goes as Republican lawmakers plan, furloughed workers could potentially be back on the job as early as Thursday.
The next step is for the House to vote on the bill. Members have been on recess since September, and are now on their way back to Washington to vote as early as Wednesday.
"You need to begin right now, returning to the Hill. We have to do this as quickly as possible,” said Speaker of the House Mike Johnson.
Johnson told members to get to DC by Wednesday to vote on the legislation to reopen the government.
