A QantasLink flight was forced to turn back just minutes after taking off from Adelaide this morning after smoke was seen in the cockpit.

The plane, QF1972, was en route to Canberra but issued a PAN requesting priority landing.

The aircraft landed normally and taxied back to the gate.

"One of our Adelaide to Canberra flights returned to Adelaide shortly after take-off this morning, after reporting a technical issue," a Qantas spokesperson said.

"The plane landed safely this morning and our engineers will be checking the aircraft today. All customers on board have since been put onto alternative flights this morning.

"Our pilots are highly trained to handle situations like this and the aircraft landed safely after the appropriate procedures were conducted."
