BERKELEY SPRINGS – Dozens of people gathered at Greenway Cemetery on Veterans Day to unveil a new Civil War Trails marker and a restored gravestone honoring Union Brig. Gen. Simon Forrester Barstow, a lesser-known officer whose life bridged Harvard’s halls, the battlefields of Gettysburg and, finally, the hills of Berkeley Springs.
The ceremony, organized by the Town of Bath Cemetery Management and Maintenance group in partnership with the Civil War Trails program and local historians, drew town and county officials, Civil War authors and residents eager to recognize the officer who had lain in relative obscurity for more than a century.
