New York (CNN) — The Dow surged higher on Tuesday, bolstered by optimism that the US government shutdown might come to an end this week.

The Dow gained 559 points, or 1.18%, and closed at a record high of 47,927.96. The broader S&P 500 gained 0.21%. Meanwhile, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell 0.25%.

Stocks were mostly higher Tuesday after the Senate on Monday approved a funding measure to end the government shutdown. The bill now heads to the House for approval before being sent to President Donald Trump’s desk.

“With the Senate passing the stopgap funding bill, it is likely that the government shutdown will end by the end of the week,” Mohit Kumar, chief economist and strategist for Europe at Jefferies, said in a note.
