The Philadelphia Police Department issued a warning to residents on Wednesday after a recent increase in scam phone calls claiming the person's loved one has been abducted.

Police say the scammers call with an unknown number and tell their victim that their family member, typically a sibling or child, has been abducted.

The scammers have been reported to even play crying in the background to initiate an emotional response, police said.

The scammers ultimate goal is to get their victim to send them money, police said.

In every reported instance of the scam, no actual abduction has been found to have taken place, police said.
