LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - Webb County Commissioners Court once again postponed a decision on implementing the 287(g) jail enforcement model program.
The 287(g) program, established by the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996, authorizes U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to deputize state and local law enforcement officers to perform certain immigration functions. This program aims to enhance community safety and national security by enabling ICE to collaborate with local agencies to identify and remove criminal non-citizens from the U.S. It strengthens partnerships between ICE and local law enforcement to uphold immigration laws and protect communities.
