AUSTIN, Texas — Relief efforts continue across Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa tore through the Caribbean, destroying 100,000 homes and leaving more than 45 people dead .

Among the groups helping victims recover is the Moses West Foundation, a nonprofit rooted in Austin. The organization specializes in atmospheric water generation – a technology that produces clean drinking water directly from the air.

Founder and former Army Ranger Moses West said the way his invention works is simple.

“What you see on a cold glass or a can when you're outside,” he explained, “that's most plentiful in the atmosphere. And the machine condenses it out.”

West said his technology is used coast-to-coast, including in Pennsylvania, Texas and soon California.
