Federal immigration authorities arrested at least 16 people in north and east Salem early Tuesday morning, according to immigrant rights groups monitoring their activities.
It’s the largest single-day immigration arrest total the city has seen in years, the groups said, and comes amid an expansion of visible immigration arrests across western Oregon.
A majority of the people arrested were farmworkers, according to a statement by Oregon for All, a coalition of nonprofits serving immigrant and Latino communities. Salem-based Latinos Unidos Siempre and farmworker union PCUN are two groups in the coalition.
Agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement smashed the windows of a vehicle of people on their way to work, the statement said.
