NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Vietnam War veterans in Connecticut spent Veterans Day reflecting on how much has changed since they first returned home from war.

Leonard Hunter, a Vietnam veteran who served from 1967 to 1968, said the respect they receive now is a welcome change from when they first returned to the U.S.

“We were disrespected we were cursed at and we were spit upon,” Hunter said.

He served alongside four of his brothers, luckily all of whom returned home from war. He said the treatment they got back home was mentally challenging to deal with.

“We were doing something that we took an oath to do, to serve our county and to come back home and be treated poorly was really bad,” Hunter said.
