OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - While Washington lawmakers work toward ending the record-long government shutdown , military families at Offutt Air Force Base say the real recovery hasn’t started yet.
Service members have been reporting to work without pay since the shutdown began 42 days ago, watching as a potential deal progresses through Congress with the hope it will bring an end to their financial strain.
At the Offutt Airmen’s Attic, the base’s food pantry, the impact is clear and growing.
“They’re scared,” said Tracy Lewis, a volunteer whose husband is a veteran and whose two sons are currently stationed at Offutt.
The 42-day shutdown has left military families scrambling financially. Even Lewis’s own sons, both airmen, had to take emergency action.
