A New Haven man will spend decades in prison after he was convicted of murdering a woman found dead in the tent near New Haven.

Jonathon D. Mattix, 38, faced a maximum of 85 years in prison after jurors last month found him guilty of murder and a sentencing enhancement for using a gun to commit the crime. Allen Superior Court Judge David Zent sentenced him Monday to serve 80 years in prison.

Mattix was charged after Dawn Vera Kovach, 54, reportedly died in January in the 2600 block of Wayne Haven Street, Fort Wayne. Kovach’s body was found Jan. 23, but police said she could have died up to 16 days earlier, according to a probable cause affidavit.
