Tax allowance update amid call which could slash bills by £1,486 View Image

The Government is being urged to introduce a major income tax relief measure. A parliamentary petition is demanding that the personal allowance be raised to £20,000.

Under current rules, a person can earn up to £12,570 annually before paying income tax. Should the threshold rise to £20,000, a basic-rate taxpayer earning £20,000 or above would save £1,486 in tax.

For a household with two working adults, both earning £20,000 or more on the basic rate, this could reduce their combined tax burden by £2,972 annually. The petition advocating for this change states: "This would help with increasing rent, mortgages, council tax, and gas and electric bills.
