BARDSTOWN, Ky. (WAVE) - Tucked away at Bardstown Fire Department Station 1 is a resource officials are glad to have and hope they never have to use.
It’s not a shiny truck or fancy equipment. It’s a trailer carrying four totes holding 1,200 gallons of foam.
“I think it’s a testament to all departments across the state of Kentucky with the distillery industries and their communities to be prepared for these types of events,” Bardstown Fire Chief Todd Spalding said.
The foam mixture, a solution of anywhere from 3% to 6%, smothers the flame and traps vapors from flammable liquids that could spark up and spread.
Bardstown and Kentucky’s booming bourbon industry runs the risk of large fires. In 1996, Heaven Hill lost seven rick houses after flames sparked and spread from a single building.
