FLINT, MI – Michael Tolbert, the first Michigan resident charged under a new safe storage gun law, was sentenced to more than 10 years in prison this week.
Tolbert entered a no contest plea on nine charges in September. He was charged for a shooting that injured his daughter, Skye McBride, in 2024.
Skye, who was 2 at the time, got ahold of Tolbert’s unsecured firearm and shot herself in the face , police said.
Tolbert was sentenced to 106 months in prison, plus an additional two years for the felony firearm charge. He was sentenced by Genesee County Circuit Court Judge Khary L. Hanible on Nov. 10.
The incident took place one day after the new safe gun storage law went into effect. It happened at Tolbert’s home in the 6000 block of Cloverlawn Drive in Flint.
