LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Louisville family describes their harrowing escape from the UPS plane crash site on Nov. 4 , and said they fled what looked like "the gates of hell."

Louisville mother Mary Ballenger said she and her children were sitting in their minivan outside Embry's Auto Parts on Grade Lane on Nov. 4, waiting for husband and father Terry Ballenger to finish work, when the nose of the MD-11 UPS cargo plane came crashing toward them.

"One minute you're sitting there playing with your kids and laughing, then you're running for your life," Ballenger said.

The family was directly in the path of the MD-11 cargo jet that crashed near Muhammad Ali International Airport last week, killing 14 people.
