IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - A 12-year-old boy from Urbandale will be this week’s Kid Captain for when the Hawkeyes take on USC.

Blake’s journey began when he was 9 years old and started getting sick at school. A headache at his 10th birthday party led doctors to discover a brain tumor.

He was taken to University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital, where doctors found a metastatic grade 4 medulloblastoma, an aggressive cancer that had spread from his brain to his spinal cord.

Blake underwent surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy.

The hospital says his scans have shown no regrowth of the cancer since his treatment ended. Blake works with a physical therapist to help regain his coordination.

Blake is now 12-years old and loves video games, LEGOs, and talking about cars. H
