NEWPORT, Ore. — As Newport officials continue pressing for answers about reports of a potential federal immigration detention facility at the city’s airport, local and state leaders say a lack of communication from federal agencies is raising concern — especially after a Coast Guard rescue helicopter was relocated from the area late last month.

Lincoln County Commissioner Walter Chuck said he first learned Monday that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is evaluating a Newport Coast Guard air facility as a possible site for an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center.
