LINCOLN, Neb. —
In all the fickle turns of Nebraska weather, the sweltering heat and biting cold, one thing remains constant: the People's City Mission is buckling under the weight of Lincoln's needs.
A recent cold snap revealed that fact.
"It's become almost undoable," Pastor Tom Barber, the CEO of the People's City Mission, said.
The shelter was designed for 250 people. Monday night saw 409 guests, a record.
"We have over 150 women and kids and men on the floor in addition to the beds that we totally occupy," Barber said. "We used to have lobbies in different places for them to go. Those are all full of beds right now."
Barber said that puts tremendous strain on the facility, staff and guests.
"You get more tempers going and more problems because everyone's feeling overcrowded," h
