MONTGOMERY, Ala. ( WSFA ) - The Central Alabama Veteran’s Health Care System (CAVHCS) first acquired their “Mobile Medical Unit,” in September 2023 partly to better serve the unhoused population.
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs , there were 33,000 homeless veterans as of 2024.
“We have qualified staff such as a nurse practitioner, a social worker, a peer support (specialist), and other outreach workers that go out and engage those veterans who are homeless,” explained Jakia Sherrell-Thompson, the Program Manager for the CAVHCS Health Care for Veterans Homeless Program. “Our nurse practitioners do flu vaccination, COVID vaccination, we are able to provide in-kind goods such as hygiene and clothing items.”
