The mother of a Montreal West high school student who was disciplined for criticizing Israel’s actions on her private social media account says the family will file a complaint with the Quebec Human Rights Tribunal claiming the school has violated their daughter’s right to freedom of expression.
Royal West Academy’s administration contends the 17-year-old student — whom The Gazette is not naming because she fears further academic repercussions — violated the school’s anti-bullying policy with two posts on her private Instagram account.
The student and her family are not denying that the student made the posts, but they say the school has no right to discipline her for expressing political opinions.
