PORTLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday extended its pause on full Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments for a few more days, signaling that it expects the issue to be resolved once the federal government reopens.

While the shutdown may be nearing an end, many families are still swamped with uncertainty.

Davis Harris arrived early to line up for the drive-through service at the Love Our City food pantry in Northeast Portland.

“We’re trying to make it in this world. This is a tough world out here,” he said.

Cars stretched for five blocks as drivers waited nearly two hours for essential groceries. Volunteers from the nonprofit greeted drivers and listened to their stories.
