PORTLAND, Ore. — A new shelter designed to support veterans recovering from substance abuse will open its doors next month in North Portland.
The Thayer Family Foundation Veterans Shelter will provide 17 shelter beds to veterans on their path to permanent housing. Unlike detox centers, the shelter is meant for veterans already in recovery who are maintaining sobriety while experiencing homelessness.
"It's a mandatory requirement: they have to be committed and come in sober, and if they're not sober and they don't maintain sobriety during the course of the program, they'll have to exit the program," said John Thayer, with the Thayer Family Foundation.
