HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Plans are underway for a new statue at the U.S. Capitol to honor Medal of Honor recipient Hershel “Woody” Williams.
West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey on Tuesday signed a proclamation to jumpstart the process.
Family, friends and fellow Marines gathered at the VFW in Huntington for the event.
After his decorated service at Iwo Jima in World War II, Williams later helped create a foundation supporting Gold Star families.
The governor’s proclamation establishes a commission to hammer out the details, including how large the statue will be and what it will be made of -- marble or metal.
Brent Casey, the grandson of Woody Williams, said his grandfather probably would have downplayed the honor.
