Tamworth Regional Council voted last night at its ordinary meeting to extend the life of the Forest Road Landfill after a review into its waste management practices found that capacity could be increased.

"Council accepted the report from staff in relation to the longevity of our refuse facility , and that's actually extended the life of that facility for another 28 years, which means probably a 60-year lifespan for that facility," Deputy mayor Jeff Budd said on Wednesday morning.

The report comes after the council's latest five-yearly review into the waste facility, and is a significant extension on the 2020 report's findings, increasing the volume available for rubbish from 2,772,472 to 5,313,110 cubic metres, bringing the total lifespan of the landfill from 31 to 59 years.
