The ascent for Benworth boys soccer has been remarkable.
The program’s inaugural season was in 1990, and prior to 2023 it had never advanced past the WPIAL quarterfinals. Coach Nick Malarbi was a three-time all-section midfielder for Bentworth in the late 2000s. He said, back then, the team was happy to win half of the games on its schedule.
Now, after a 2-1 win Tuesday night against Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (20-2-0) in the PIAA Class 1A semifinals at Peters Township Middle School, the Bearcats (24-0-0) are headed to their second consecutive state championship match.
They’ll face District 1 champion Delco Christian at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Northeastern High School in Manchester. Not only will it mark the second-straight appearance for Bentworth, but it’s the second state championshi
