Before the Green Bay City Council took its first step toward a new professional sports team in the city, City Council President Brian Johnson asked a “really serious question":
“Would it be referred to as a soccer club, or a football club?”
On Nov. 11, the Green Bay City Council approved an agreement with the United Soccer League to explore the possibility of bringing to the city the sport that is called soccer in the United States, and football to much of the rest of the world.
The process is still in the very early stages – the agreement only means the city won't work with another professional soccer league, and that USL won’t work with another city in northeast Wisconsin. This exclusivity lasts until September 2026 and can be extended up until September 2027.
