Maitland City Council's investment in Maitland Park infrastructure is paying dividends.
It's a case of "build it and they did come", with the Hunter Hornets Regional Touch Tournament returning to the city for the first time since 2018.
The Maitland Touch Association is expecting more than 58 teams and more than 1000 competitors and supporters to take part at the tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
It's a boon for the city's hospitality coffers, with up to $500,000 expected to be spent on meals and accommodation by teams, and a boost for Maitland teams' preparations for the upcoming State Cup Tournament, in Port Macquarie from December 5-7.
The list of state and nationally significant sporting events coming to the city doesn't stop there.
