Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto arrived in Sydney on Wednesday for meetings with Australian officials.

It's the first time he has visited Australia since taking office last year.

Prabowo was greeted by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong at Albanese's official Sydney residence, Kirribilli House.

He was then given a ceremonial welcome, before meeting the country's Governor-General Sam Mostyn.

Prabowo most recently visited Australia as minister of defence and president-elect in August last year. He was inaugurated that October.

Albanese met Prabowo in Jakarta in May this year for the Australia–Indonesia annual leaders’ meeting during the prime minister’s first overseas trip following his re-election that month.

Prabowo is expected to will hold several other meetings to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, education and industrial partnerships.

Australia considers Indonesia - its nearest neighbour after Papua New Guinea - one of its most important bilateral relationships.
