A Victorian council has urged that a centre for drug users be moved away from a primary school after years of safety concerns.
Inner-Melbourne's Yarra City Council has moved a motion for the controversial injecting room to be relocated, calling on Premier Jacinta Allan’s government to take action.
North Richmond Medically Supervised Injecting Room (MSIR), located on the North Richmond Community Health site, was set up next door to Richmond West Primary School in 2018.
Its location has sparked outrage from locals who claimed the area has been plagued with open drug use, overdoses and anti-social behaviour.
The council passed a motion for its relocation on Tuesday night, with Yarra Mayor Stephen Jolly saying the move was “better late than never”.
