BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - The northern lights have been spotted across North America tonight, with reports coming in as far south as South Mississippi.

A photo out of Pearl River County by Luke Rankin shows a glowing red in the northern sky tonight.

Jason Maurer, from Saucier, submitted this photo from Saucier on Tuesday night via the WLOX Weather App.

Northern lights are very rare to see on the Gulf Coast and hard to see with the naked eye.

While they may be visible very faintly to the naked eye, the best way to view them is with long-exposure photography. Cameras on phones work very well to capture them.

For best viewing, go to a very dark place and look low on the northern horizon.

This rare event is caused by a strong geomagnetic storm.
