ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - It has been two weeks since Hurricane Melissa ripped through the Caribbean, making landfall in Jamaica and Cuba. The Category 5 hurricane topped out at 185 mph.
Officials said the historic Atlantic storm already claimed the lives of at least 45 people, displaced thousands and caused millions of dollars in damage, according to the Associated Press.
Some metro Atlanta humanitarians are starting to return from the devastation, but they will not be away from the island for long as there is likely years worth of work there.
“Nothing can really prepare you for what you for what you’re about to see,” said Jonathan Arogeti, the Caribbean Humanitarian Response Lead for CARE, who spent a week in Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa.
