In a surprising turn, US President Donald Trump has defended the H-1B visa programme, which primarily benefits Indian professionals, during an interview with Fox News. He acknowledged the necessity of bringing in skilled foreign workers to fill critical roles in the American workforce, especially in complex fields like manufacturing and defence.
When asked about the potential impact of H-1B visa restrictions on American workers, Trump stated, "I agree, but you also have to bring in talent." He emphasized that the US lacks certain specialized skills, saying, "No, you don't have certain talents. People have to learn." This statement came in response to claims that there are plenty of talented Americans available for these jobs.
Trump's comments mark a notable shift from his previous hardline stance on immigration. Earlier this year, his administration increased the annual fee for new H-1B visa applications to USD 100,000, a significant rise from the previous fee of about USD 1,500. This change was part of a broader effort to tighten immigration policies. However, the White House clarified that the new fee applies only to fresh applicants and not to current visa holders.
During the interview, Trump also referenced a recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid at a Hyundai facility in Georgia, where over 300 South Korean workers were detained. He pointed out that the removal of skilled foreign workers complicates the manufacturing of complex products, stating, "Making batteries is very complicated and very dangerous."
Trump's remarks reflect a growing recognition of the importance of foreign talent in maintaining the US's industrial and technological edge, especially as the country faces a shortage of skilled workers in certain sectors. His comments come amid ongoing debates about immigration and employment in the US, particularly concerning the H-1B visa programme, which has been a focal point in discussions about foreign workers in the American job market.
