FORT MADISON (WGEM) - Fort Madison City Council has approved the design and specs for its new firehouse.
Bids are now being accepted with the lowest bid to be accepted in December.
After that, work will begin at the site, about three blocks away from the current firehouse at 22 nd Street and Avenue L.
“It was a matter of being responsible to what is right for public safety, what is right for the taxpayers in terms of dollars, but yet what is still appropriate so that it can grow and be sized right moving forward,” said Fort Madison Mayor Matt Mohrfeld.
The city has outgrown the current firehouse that was built in the 1950s.
The department cannot fit all their equipment inside the building; firefighters are using an outdoor Scotty’s Potty for a bathroom and share a small quarter for
