A Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office deputy Tuesday evening shot and wounded an armed person in Tickfaw who authorities said had become a threat to others during an escalating mental health crisis.

Louisiana State Police said they were called to the scene on Waltrip Lane near La. Highway 442 at around 6:40 p.m. One wounded person was transported to a local hospital and no deputies were injured, State Police said.

The investigation is ongoing. State Police did not immediately release more information.

Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Gerald Strcker called the shooting "unfortunate" in a statement posted to Facebook Tuesday night, and said it involved an armed individual who had become a danger to surrounding residents and deputies during a mental health crisis.
