That anxiety is heightened now, recruiters say, by the number of people applying for each role.

Add to that the opaque nature of the recruitment process overall, and it is a messy picture for all involved.

Growing unemployment queues

Official September employment data shows 684,000 Australians classified as unemployed, up 5.2 per cent on August.

These are people out of employment and actively seeking work.

And it is clearly more challenging for some job candidates to land a role.
