The majority of the Liberal Party has expressed support for abandoning net zero, amid internal debate over climate policy.

Liberal MPs and Senators met at Parliament House on Wednesday for a nearly five hour meeting.

According to sources, there were 17 MP in favour and 28 against net zero being retained. Four were undecided.

Senior figures, including Andrew Hastie, James Paterson, Alex Hawke, Ted O'Brien and Michaelia Cash, railed against the net zero by 2050 target in the partyroom.

Meanwhile, moderates including Julian Leeser, Paul Scarr, Jane Hume and Anne Ruston argued in favour.

Opposition Leader Sussan Ley told reporters in the corridors afterwards that it was an "excellent meeting".
