Queensland's prisons watchdog claims separation rooms at youth detention centres are becoming "soiled with urine" because they lack facilities such as toilets.
In a new report made public on Wednesday, the Inspector of Detention Services raised concerns about the cleanliness of separation rooms, suggesting they were inhumane.
Separation occurs when a child is placed in a locked room by themselves. It might be done if they are unwell, if they need time alone, or to protect other people and property.
As part of the report, the inspector visited three facilities in 2024, including the Cleveland Youth Detention Centre, where a number of allegations from children were raised.
