The Eastern New Mexico Medical Center's Senior Circle hosted a Veterans Day celebration on Tuesday to honor locals who served in the U.S. Military and their families.

Many of the approximately 50 people in attendance seemed deeply moved by a short video presentation about the creation of the poem “Star Spangled Banner,” by Francis Scott Key, which today is the basis for our National Anthem. Several attendees commented they were unfamiliar with the events during the War of 1812 which moved Key to put his words into verse.

Key had been on board a British warship in Baltimore Harbor to negotiate an exchange of prisoners while the British bombarded Fort McHenry. He watched as a huge flag over the fort remained standing after the assault, signaling the failure of the bombardment and the end t
