Hotel guests worldwide have faced sudden evictions following the bankruptcy of Sonder, a company partnered with Marriott. The abrupt closure has left holidaymakers stranded in locations from Boston to Dubai. Many returning to their accommodations found their belongings hastily packed into plastic bags or left in hallways.

On Sunday, Marriott announced that its licensing agreement with Sonder had been terminated due to the company’s default. In a statement, Marriott confirmed, "As a result, Sonder is no longer affiliated with Marriott Bonvoy, and Sonder properties are not available for new bookings on Marriott’s channels."

Marriott has stated that its immediate priority is to support guests currently staying at Sonder properties, as well as those with upcoming reservations. The hotel chain will be reaching out to guests who booked directly through its channels, including the Marriott Bonvoy App and its global reservation centres, to assist with their booking needs.

Patrick M D'Aoust, a guest at a Sonder property in Montréal, Canada, shared his experience. He received an email on Sunday afternoon instructing him to vacate his room by 9am the following day. When he inquired about staying until the usual checkout time of 11am, he was informed by staff that they had been directed to clear the building as quickly as possible.

This situation has raised concerns among guests who are now left to find alternative accommodations on short notice, as the fallout from Sonder's financial troubles continues to unfold.
