Donald Trump has insisted he had an “obligation” to sue the BBC over the way it edited a speech he made to supporters ahead of the January 6 Capitol riot.
The US president has set his legal team on the corporation, calling for the BBC to apologise, issue a retraction and “appropriately compensate” Trump for the “harm caused” – to the tune of a whopping $1 billion, no less.
Director general Tim Davie and chief executive of BBC News Deborah Turness have both resigned over the row, further plunging the broadcaster into chaos.
BBC chair Samir Shah also apologised for an “error of judgement” over the Panorama episode on Monday.
Trump told Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle overnight that his “beautiful” speech had been “butchered” by the Panorama episode, thus “defrauding” viewers.
