Legislation to crack down on fraud against public authorities is poised to become law as the UK Government compromises with peers. The Public Authorities (Fraud, Error and Recovery) Bill will introduce new powers to enable the Public Sector Fraud Authority (PSFA) to investigate public sector fraud outside the tax and social security systems.
It will also enhance the Department for Work and Pension’s (DWP) ability to tackle fraud and error in the benefits system.
The Bill has been going through so-called ‘ping-pong’, where legislation is batted between the two Houses of Parliament until agreement is reached. Peers accepted a number of UK Government compromises and assurances on Tuesday, and the legislation cleared the upper chamber.
