Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital’s emergency department was seriously disrupted after a sewage spill forced staff to evacuate patients to other parts of the building.
It’s understood a blocked pipe burst on Tuesday night, wreaking havoc in the department.
Plumbing issues have plagued the hospital for months, but those earlier issues were due to a lack of investment in infrastructure.
Tuesday night’s incident is believed to be the result of sabotage.
It’s understood a disgruntled patient stuffed cups, towels, sanitary pads and a t-shirt down the toilet, causing a major blockage in the pipes.
Several ED bays had to be cleared and cleaned in the aftermath, with clean-up continuing well into Wednesday afternoon.
