Having lost captain Auston Matthews and goalie Anthony Stolarz to injuries, the Maple Leafs showed some fight — but not enough to come back in Boston.
Bruins games always seem to be a measuring stick for the Leafs. And usually, like in losing 5-3 on Tuesday night, the Leafs fail to measure up.
They trailed early and a rally fell short as Boston won its seventh in a row, led by two goals from David Pastrnák and big hits by Nikita Zadorov.
“We didn’t execute on our opportunities and we have to do a better job of keeping the puck out of our net,” said Leafs centre John Tavares. “We’re right there in the game. I thought we competed right to the end and stuck together.”
The Leafs have lost three in a row with significant injuries mounting.
On Matthews’ last shift, he took a big hit
